Hair structure is held together by three types of chemical bonds: covalent bonds (disulfide bonds — the strongest, responsible for hair shape and strength), ionic bonds (salt bonds — affected by pH, responsible for hair elasticity), and hydrogen bonds (the weakest but most numerous — affected by moisture, responsible for hair softness and style hold). Coloring, bleaching, perming and UV exposure can break down all three types of bonds. The cuticle is the outermost protective layer of hair, made up of 5–12 overlapping layers of transparent, scale-like cells.
